Leicester city centre has once again been awarded Purple Flag status, recognising it as a safe, vibrant and well-managed destination for the evening and night-time economy.
The city has now retained the prestigious accreditation every year since 2019, highlighting the strength of partnership working between BID Leicester, Leicester City Council, Leicestershire Police and other key organisations.
Purple Flag status is awarded by the Association of Town & City Management (ATCM) and assesses cities on safety, accessibility, diversity and overall experience after dark. Leicester met or exceeded the required standard across all five categories in the latest 2025 renewal.
The assessment recognised a number of key initiatives helping to keep people safe and support businesses, including Leicester’s night-time medical provision, proactive policing through Project Vigilant – which has contributed to a 45.6% reduction in night-time economy related sexual offences – and the continued success of the Best Bar None scheme.
The city’s vibrant offer was also highlighted, with major events such as Light Up Leicester attracting over 100,000 visitors and a growing food and drink scene showcased through Leicester Restaurant Week.

Work is now underway on a new Night-Time Economy Action Plan for 2026–27, ensuring Leicester continues to evolve and strengthen its offer after dark.
Light Up Leicester, attracting over 100,000 visitors across four nights and Brew Beat, a free three-day festival drawing thousands into the city centre in the evening.
